Last night's DFR was off the hook; for anyone who couldn't attend, it was a delight seeing the LA tech-set getting together in a massive way. We have footage coming next week for those that missed the live stream. Anytime you can have the Web 1.0 suits get together w/the Web 2.0 jeans & t-shirt crowd, you have a good social tech goulash going.
One manager I met (who shall go nameless) also works for a large search engine/portal company with an office in LA and had spent the day laying off and saying goodbye to friends and colleagues. While I could tell this person was obviously affected from the experience, I could also tell they were buoyed by the event and the atmosphere. Indeed, bringing the tech slackers, the deal makers and the just plain tech-curious, a new community is formed.
TechZulu Coming At You in 2008, 2009
With the year already starting to close, everyone gets thoughtful of the year that just passed and what is in store for the future. It's not only natural but downright healthy to be self-reflective. We are also putting together our plans for 2009.
I got a challenge last night from Efren Toscano, our CEO here at TechZulu. We are about to turn on the spigot of awesome content here at TZ in the first months of 2009 and he challenged me to get started by writing every day through the end of this year. To keep you, the reader, and myself interested, please email me w/your story requests/suggestions and/or compliments/complaints! alex [at] techzulu [dot] com
If you are in LA Thursday night (and probably Friday morning)
I'm not actually supposed to tell you about this, it's all hush-hush, but check back later for some very cool happenings to wrap up the year with the TechZulu crew. I can't reveal the details but I can say reserve this Thursday night for a party night. Also, um, you may want to get some breath freshner and your best Idol audition tape - ok, scratch that last one.
Start Here
So today is day 1 of 15. Please do contact me and comment on the posts, especially if you agree/disagree/like/love any of it! To sum up our new direction and to throw a little isiZulu at you from the Lion King: Siyo nqoba (English: We will conquer)!

I know you aren't really working at your desk anyway; you're checking the news, Facebook and email. You are thinking about the party you just had/will have and looking at someone else's/your own holiday wish list. Surf with a purpose by voting in the FINAL voting round of the Open Web Awards!
According to Pete Cashmore, there were "more than 50,000 nominations and in excess of 80,000 verified votes". You can find both familiar and unfamiliar names in the list below which makes this vote so exciting. While none of the companies are associated with Rick Astley or Deborah "Debbie" Gibson, you can still make a dark horse count this year, so VOTE!
You will be able to vote up until 11:59pm PST on Sunday, December 14th - once per day
Full List of Finalists - Open Web Awards follows:

There are a lot of news reader websites and applications out on the web these days. Google Reader and a slew of others try to keep up with sites you enjoy and email or notify you when something you care about happens. One interesting approach is Hermosa Beach-based Streamy which I had an opportunity to try during their beta.
Streamy's notion of surfing is a group affair and they focus on social networking as a core aspect of the site. Drop your favorite link into a Streamy IM window and chat about the sites you care about.

Beyond this, Streamy has a very slick, clean interface which makes good use of AJAX, is intuitive, and any widget user will feel right at home dragging boxes of content around their home page.

I echo the concerns some other pre-reviews have raised about Streamy: mainly that they are introducing established features that you can find elsewhere. I also noticed they have some issues with Safari, although both IE and Chrome behaved well. Finally, time will tell once they open their doors if they can break out of the pack.
For beta invites feel free to contact myself alex [at] techzulu [dot] com or any other of the TZ crew members |

First, thanks to Efren for everything. I am excited to be your new TechZulu Editor In Chief. As part of my techno- hippocratic oath, I promise to keep improving the quality of content here at TechZulu. Right off, I want to mention that I am a big fan of TechZulu, and of the idea of helping the community to thrive by covering "hot topics" that we in tech care about.
I didn’t know Efren was going to be paying me in bubble wrap and packing peanuts, so I need your help. Good, timely, tech writing is hard to find. I am putting out the call for any and all aspiring tech writers--bloggers and people w/an interesting tale to email me: alex [at] techzulu [dot] com. I can’t promise I will respond, but I do read everything and cogent work samples work best.
Finally, I want to offer my rationale for taking the job: my perspective is coming from that of a programmer, not a journalist, and I feel that it is important to make this distinction on day 1. To quote Adrian Holovarty, co-creator of Django in a recent interview:
I believe it’s easier for programmers to become journalists than it is for journalists to become programmers, but both sides need to gain an appreciation for the other in order for this sort of thing to happen more often. Fortunately, some news organizations are starting to hire developers with this in mind, and some geeks are realizing journalism is a great, (mostly) pure field that lets you improve the world through information.
So it is with the idea of ‘improving the world through information’ that we set out to tackle the cool startups, the upcoming tech trends and ideas shaping our community, and those tech ideas that are integral to sustaining the planet, to the best "buys" at Circuit City. And we don’t have to do that with a snarky message or taking a red marker to an image. As a great driver of industry, technology improves people’s lives – let’s focus on the positive and find ways to help the world through content and connectedness. |
