Guest post by Lynn Langit of Contagious Curiosity We had a rocking good time hosting a bunch of SoCal DigiGirlz at the Microsoft Irvine, CA offices over the last two days. There we held our first-ever technology camp around the two themes - hands-on experience with visual programming environments (like PopFly, MSRobotics and StoryTelling Alice); and technology career information (from women computer science majors, entrepreneurs [Alexandra from GirlGamer.com] and technology professionals). Pictured below are just some of the people who made the camp happen - from left to right, Microsoft Developer Evangelist, USC graduate and MS Robotics expert, Lindsay Rutter; Logistics guru and volunteer coordinator, Brittanie Ngo; me; design professional, technical instructor and PopFly Game creator instructor, Gina Johnston; and freelance .NET developer, database instructor Kim Schmidt. Not pictured is our favorite international developer, Cigdem Patlak, who, among many other things, got her former female developer colleagues in Instanbul and some of Microsoft's product team (from the Expression's team) in Redmond to send welcome pictures to our local DigiGirlz. We made a little video about this, check it out at the bottom of this post. We used a Windows Live Space to record information about our event and I will upload all of the classfiles (power point slides) to the associated SkyDrive, so you can grab those files if you'd like. Here's the URL: http://digigirlz.spaces.live.com/ Hit the jump to read the rest and a MS Surface video. |

This month's Mindshare had to be the best one yet. They changed up the scenery a little more than usual by taking it to a whole new location. It was located outdoors at the Lacy Studio Lofts, a gorgeous new studio community not far from the Brewery. What Mindshare focused on this month was brainologies: neuro, psycho, and cogno visions and also the potentiality of bicycles. Some of the presenters on the brainologies side were: Tristan Ursell / Biophysicist, Caltech In Your Eye's Mind John Pyles / Cognitive Neuroscientist, UC Irvine Reality: It's All In Your Head Travis Savo / Evil Genius (and CTO, Neogence) Damn Your Eyes: Hacking Your Vision With Augmented Reality Chris Hughes / Mathematician and Hardware Hacker Neuro-Feedback: The Future of Gaming? On potentiality of bicycles side we had: Adrian Van Anz / Founder and Designer, Derringer Cycles Resurrecting the Historic Motorcyle Andrea White / Executive Director, BikeStation Making Clean Transportation A Reality Rudy Roy / Founder, Intelligent Mobility International (IMI) 2 Bikes Can Change a Life John Canning / Executive Producer, Green Living Project Its all about the coffee and the bike To check out the rest of the presenters hit the jump. |

Twiistup 4 was a fantastic event filled with amazing start-ups. Twiistup 4 featured 11 Internet start-ups to demonstrate their products and services. The Twiistup "fan favorite" was ToolsToLife.com, a Web site and online community focused on self-improvement programs. Attendees voted for their favorite showoff at the event and were able to text in their votes through Mozes.com. TechZulu allows you to relive that night with this awesome highlight reel from Twiistup 4. (See if you can catch yourself in the video.) |

Is celebrity the new mass medium? With websites like TMZ, PerezHilton, The Superficial and Yahoo's omg! offering a non-stop view into the lives of the rich and famous, is there still room for traditional celebrity media to thrive? These are just some of the pointed questions raised at the recent EconCeleb conference at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. The day was packed with insights from hard-hitting media executives such as Bonnie Fuller, former EVP and chief editorial director of American Media, Inc., and Harvey Levin, managing editor of TMZ.com. Nearly 200 people attended the event, produced by media company ContentNext. TechZulu caught up with Founder Rafat Ali at the end of the day to get his take on the economics of social media, and what’s on the horizon for ContentNext since being acquired by the UK’s Guardian News & Media (GNM). |

Last Friday, Andrew Warner of Mixergy put on an amazing Lunch 2.0, thanks to ArtistForce. They went all out at the Knitting Factory and had Wickhead, a band from South Africa play on stage. I did an interview with Bronic, the lead singer of Wickhead and asked him if ArtistForce is really a value add to them, and how much easier it actually makes it for them to book a gig. Check out the event video and the interview with Bronic to find out. You can help support ArtistForce by voting for Jonathan’s South By Southwest panel. The SoCal tech community also has a panel entry at SXSW too, so throw a vote our way. |
