Alex Albrecht is Totally Rad!
Okay, he was a member of the judging panel during my whole Mahalo stint, but after running into Alex Albrecht, I have to tell you, judging asides, this guy is pretty freaking cool! Alex gave me the low down on the latest happenings with Revision 3 and "The Totally Rad show," which he co-hosts alongside Jeff Cannata and Dan Trachtenberg.
After spending just a few moments in his company, my suggestion to you is this: The time has come to throw away your stuffy New York Times movie review and turn off boring, old Ebert and Roeper. If you're in the mood for something new, innovative, entertaining and "totally rad," then fire up your computer and sit down to enjoy some real, funny, tongue-in-cheek movie and video game reviews.
BarCamp LA Investment Advice: Buy a Safe
There has been a lot of confusion as to what the current implications of the US Stock Market are and how, as individuals and business owners, we are affected by it. At the latest BarCampLA, Mahalo’s very own, Jason Calacanis and financial consultant Mike Patatian, lent their insights on the current economic situation.
Calacanis also dropped some highly anticipated info on the future of Mahalo and how the economic crisis has affected the state of his company. Being an outsider of Mahalo, Patatian provided his opinion on how individuals should react considering the market’s current state. He advised that investments are cyclical, there will always be new leadership in the market, and a new sector will always emerge. It is a phrase coined "From Rubble to Bubble." The seeds of the current economic crisis were sown from the last economic boom, and right now the seeds for the next expansion are being planted. For an investor, they key is to look ahead, not look back. Towards the end, a question came from the audience asking about the 2009 forecast and if there are any bright verticals or mini-niches to be on the watch for. Patatian jokingly commented on how people are taking their money out of mutual funds and putting it away in safes. It is a sector that is booming and they cannot keep enough inventory in stock. Calacanis recommended investing in yourself. For example, if you are a PHP developer, invest in becoming a better one. In conclusion, look to the future, and if all else fails, invest in a safe. Putting the Social in Social Media - Social Media Club LA Hosts its Second Meeting: A Social Media Primer
Guest post by Jackie Peters of Heavybag Media
It was my pleasure to host the second meeting of the LA chapter of the Social Media Club. This month's meeting featured a panel of social media rock stars. The goal of the evening was to get everyone on the same page with a working concept of what social media is and how it can be used in various aspects of communication. Panelists included Brian Solis of FutureWorks PR, Nicole Jordan - PR guru with Rubicon Project and Clearstone Venture Partners, social media consultant Robert Richman and Michael Dorausch - a chiropractor who regularly uses social tools to promote his business. The meeting was held at Mahalo HQ in Santa Monica. Done SEO was kind enough to bring in the wine, which helped liven up the event. The panelists shared their thoughts and experiences with the audience regarding the definition of social media, its place in the world, its influence on markets and its impact on brands. The question of "who owns social media" was brought up. Many departments and disciplines are hopping on the social media band wagon and there's lots of hype floating around in all directions. But which department within an organization should be responsible ultimately? IMHO it needs it's own department. But for the time being, until that gets sorted out, most panelists seemed to agree that it belongs more in customer service than anywhere else. This is because of the element of human interaction that is so vital within the social space. An audience member brought up the fact that companies are now writing computer programs to simulate a live chat with automated conversation responses. These computer programs are designed to detect when the conversation is not going all that well and at that point redirects to an actual live person, with the person on the other end never has any idea. I'd hate to see anyone try to pull something like that in the social space, but it could happen. Brain Solis brought up the point that social media was a real game changer for brands. We delved into that statement a bit further to get to the meat of it. What makes social media a game changer for brands is the bottom-up versus top-down nature of the platform. In all other forms of brand communication, other than possibly WOM, the brand is in control of the message, the brand issues the message and people are either receptive or not. In the social landscape it's up to a brand to participate with the community in order to become integrated into the multi-dimensional communication streams that are flying around the interwebz faster than you can imagine. I'm really looking forward to the next meeting, possible topics include: the anthropology of the social web, digital discovery and distribution, politics on the social web, or possibly using the social web for social change. Let me know what you'd like to learn at our next meeting!
