Texting and driving has been taboo for over a decade since the ownership of mobile phones have continuously increased. According to surveys, over 100,000 car accidents a year are caused by a driver texting. Moreover, a recent AT&T Wireless survey suggests that 75% of teens consider it “common” for friends to text while driving.

On September 7th, Coloft in Santa Monica, California will be hosting the AT&T Mobile App Hackathon.  Produced by the AT&T Developer Program and organized by Alex Donn, this competition is tied to AT&T’s larger, It Can Wait Don’t Text and Drive campaign.

The event welcomes both technical and non-technical attendees to build creative apps and compete for prizes. It kicks off Friday night with networking, pitches and team formation. On Saturday, teams will have the opportunity to build creative apps aligned with the It Can Wait campaign and finally, Saturday night at 7pm teams will present their new ventures. This free competition provides food, drinks and snacks to all attendees and boasts amazing prizes including over $30,000 in cash, $500 in gift cards and services from Github. It’s a great way to connect with like-minded individuals in the tech and startup community and the best way to meet potential co-founders for future projects.
