MoviePass  has launched a new payment card technology in what it says is a move  to bolster the dwindling theater attendance across the US by over 100 percent.

Geo-location Based Technology

The new geo-location based technology via their membership card, or simply a debit card  for movie theaters is activated with the MoviePass iPhone App, which has been released simultaneously. According to the founders, the technology allows members to securely use their subscription to go to any theater that accepts major credit cards.

The New York headquartered  company launched in 2010 is a premier movie theater subscription service and provides film enthusiasts the ability to attend unlimited movies at a monthly fee.

Watch Movies You Want, Wherever

According to Stacy Spikes, CEO and cofounder of MoviePass: “MoviePass gives moviegoers the opportunity to see the movies they want, at the theaters they want – perfect for film enthusiasts who are at the heart of Hollywood’s economic engine.” Spikes added, “Moviegoers now have more at-home entertainment options than ever before, and MoviePass is dedicated to driving traffic back to theaters and reducing the friction of moviegoing.”

Current users of MoviePass received the cards plus nearly 75,000 individuals on MoviePass’ waitlist. Members of MoviePass were able to invite up to 10 friends to join the service during the invite-only launch date on October 2 while those interested could log on MoviePass.com to join.

MoviePass Works Simply

A member uses MoviePass app to check-in to their preferred theater, select a movie and showtime, which unlocks their MoviePass membership card and acts as a re-loadable debit card.  The member can then get their movie ticket from a nearby theater kiosk or use their MoviePass membership card.

Increased Movie Sales By 123 percent

According to Hamet Watt, cofounder of MoviePass, “MoviePass recently completed nine-months of closed beta trials and saw members increase their movie theater attendance by as much as 64 percent and their concession sales by 123 percent,” and added,”This should come as very exciting news to our industry as we look for new ways to engage with moviegoers.”

MoviePass currently invitation only service is available  for testing nationally at $29.99 a month one 2D movie per day.

Founded by technology and entertainment entrepreneurs Stacy Spikes and Hamet Watt, MoviePass is backed by  AOL Ventures, True Ventures, WME, Lambert Media, Moxie Pictures, Nala Pictures, Brian Lee, Diego Berdakin, MJ Eng, Ryan Steelberg and Adam Lilling.
