Palm Pre or iPhone 3G S, What’s Your Pick?
So the Palm Pre is out and the iPhone 3G S is being delivered to you if you don’t already have it. These two are going to be hot items this summer. The traction that Palm has received for the Pre is mainly due to the fact that it’s features weren’t designed to compete against the iPhone 3G, but the 3G S (3.0 software update).
We are going to go through a few key features that people have ooooo’d and ahhhhh’d about with the Pre and have wished the previous iPhone had.
The Universal search function on the Pre is a single search bar that allows keyword and searches through web and user’s applications, contacts, and dialing information. But iPhone 3.0 brings Spotlight similar to OS X to the iPhone, with searching within Calendar items, iPod tracks, Notes, contacts, web pages, email headers and applications.
Multitasking with the Pre can be done but do you really want it to? The Pre has the ability to run multiple apps at the same time. Apple has said they have tested running background apps on BlackBerrys, Windows Mobile devices and so on, and in every case “stand-by time dropped by 80% or more.”
The Pre has full GPS navigation functions, with turn-by-turn directions, However it’s going to cost you. The Sprint navigation is powered by Telenav. iPhone 3.0 gives this all to you for free :)
The Pre uses Palm’s Synergy to link up Outlook, Google and even Facebook calendars to one location. The iPhone 3.0 adds support for Exchange, CalDAV and .ics formats for subscribing to different calendars, and it’ll let you create meeting invitations. CalDAV is supported by Google Calendar, Yahoo Calendar beta and others, making it a now potentially fully-synchronized Calendar app.
The Pre has a 3-megapixel digital camera with an LED flash light, although it has no support for video recording…yet. The iPhone 3G S comes with a 3-megapixels auto-focus camera and video recording capabilities. To top it off the iPhone also has a similar iMovie editing system to cut down the videos you record.
The ever awaiting feature of copying and pasting has finally arrived for the iPhone 3.0. The Pre has it as well but they don’t have a cool “shake to undo” feature…Oh etch and sketch how we miss thee. Apple’s been holding off on this basic feature for quite some time but they’ve nailed it.
So what is it going to be for you this summer?
