Super Happy Dev House: Why Code Alone?

The stereotype of most programmers is a guy sitting in a dark room with nothing but the glow of a monitor screen keeping him company.  However, that is certainly not the case with the participants of Super Happy Dev House (SHDH).  Last weekend I attended the 36th Super Happy Dev House held at Microsoft Mountain View Office. What originally started as just a couple of guys getting together at a home to get help or swap ideas on a few projects they had going on, has grown to over a 400+ person event.  Outgrowing their beginnings of using homes they needed to expand to accommodate all who wanted to participate.  Now holding their gatherings at a few small companies such as Microsoft and Google, this is one event a programmer should attend at some point in their lives.

I got a chance to speak with Joel Franusic one of the organizers of the SHDH and asked him a few questions about the event, its history and if they would ever go to invite only.  Check out the interview below:

At this event they also put together what they called “Lighting Talks”.  A few programmers get up on stage and talk about any new project or programs they have developed or even helpful tips that other programmers can take home.  TechZulu captured all of the Lighting Talks and can be found here in our video section.
