Ubuntu Edge | Crowdfunding a New Type of Cell Phone
Canonical has launched its crowdfunding campaign for their new phone, the Ubuntu Edge, at IndieGoGo. Backers of the IndieGoGo campaign will be the exclusive owners of the Ubuntu Edge. Ubuntu’s first foray into the mobile ecosystem is kicking up some crazy buzz with both its new mobile OS and the hardware itself.
The Ubuntu Edge has two points of interest: the hardware specs and the Ubuntu mobile OS. On the software side, the Edge dual-boots through either Ubuntu mobile or the Android OS. According to Canonical, the Ubuntu Edge rids of a “home” button because of the slick and simple interface the Ubuntu OS provides. Since Ubuntu is an open source software, a lot of customization can be done for those with some coding skills.
The Edge comes packed with impressive mobile technology. Promised with a core which can rival most PCs, the Edge will transform from a sleek mobile phone into a personal desktop (with a docking device) and vice versa, just don’t forget to get cell phone insurance for it. In desktop mode, a full version of Ubuntu’s desktop OS will be on display. Other hardware notes an internal storage of 128 GB and 4 GB of RAM. The screen size comes in at 4.5 inches with a resolution of 720 x 1280. The battery is composed of a silicon-anode which holds more power in a smaller package. Dual-LTE and GSM antennas supply the phone with connectivity to any 4G network, no matter where you may be. A single piece of metal gives the Edge its sleek undertones and sapphire crystals cover the screen and considered one of the most durable materials. An exotic blend of materials and technology truly shapes the Edge into a one-of-kind phone.
IndieGoGo provides tech enthusiasts and other buyers the only way to obtain the Ubuntu Edge. The goal is set at a record-high 32 million dollars. Crowdfunding lets people become more familiar with the product in its earlier stages of development and helps create a connection between the company and the backer. The goal may seem excessive, but this allows Canonical to sell the Edge at a competitive price and prove the mobile ecosystem still has a lot of room for growth. Last day to contribute is August 21, which means there is still plenty of time left to get your hands on the Edge.
