Sony Gives It Up at E3
Microsoft may have owned June 1st with its announcement of Project Natal and Xbox Live’s social media integration, but that doesn’t mean Sony’s out of the game. June 2nd, Sony made a few surprising announcements that left even this Xbox lover shellshocked.
First on the table: Final Fantasy XIV
Most of us have been drooling over the upcoming release of Final Fantasy XIII, so when Square-Enix said FFXIV was in the works, the crowd went a little nuts. The video shown was filled mostly cinematic but it definitely whetted this audience’s appetite. As for Final Fantasy XIII, look for the release of that game
Second up: MAG
Granted, I don’t follow a lot of what’s going on with the PS3 crowd, but this FPS is set to kill with stunning graphics and 256-player (yes, you read that right) online gameplay. The frame rate was smooth and the potential firefights, enormous. Right at that moment, I wanted to run out and buy a PS3
Finally: The Playstation Motion Controller
Think of this as a Wiimote that glows a different color based on in-game action. The Sony crew showed the audience a few tech demos which for the most part were underwhelming. That was until the guy demo-ing the device picked up a second controller. Yup, two controllers. Remember that two-handed bow-and-arrow action we all wanted to see in Zelda: Twilight Princess? They did that.
What wasn’t a surprise: God of War III. This one was expected but took in a lot of applause. No surprise there. I’m not a big fan of third-person hack-and-slashers, but clearly, plenty in the audience were. The graphics for this game are were simply top-notch and the gameplay as ferocious as ever. Look for this one March 2010.
