The Return of Meritocracy
During this time of economic uncertainly, it is good to see the incoming POTUS select sound advisors, especially in the area of science and his pick for Energy Secretary. This is particularly remarkable considering the recent history of Chinese Americans in US Science such as Wen Ho Lee, who was accused and later cleared of spying. Last week, Dr. Steven Chu, a Nobel Laureate in Physics, was tapped to be the new Energy Secretary.
Change Online
Online, we are seeing a similar sign of change in choices as the old pay-per-click model breaks down. New companies are going to have to compete based on their content and ability to draw eyeballs, not how much they are dumping in banner ads or link bait. Those with the largest Twitter followers tend to talk about subjects that are deeper (granted, w/in the format of 140 characters). Yes, Brittany still reigns supreme on some search engines, but the Britney-Dex is on the decline.
The Spears Volume Index: Point “A” is when Brittany first entered rehab in 2007.
Westminster, CA
Here in California, the city of Westminster, long a home to many Vietnamese Americans, is now the 1st US city council to have the majority of its members born from Vietnamese descent. More remarkable, many people aren’t commenting on their race but what the new council can do for the city of Westminster, home to Little Saigon. Everywhere you look, more people are making educated decisions based on the facts, not the package cover.
Focus
Lean companies will recognize those who are thinking like executives and w/increasing profits. According to Wikipedia, “In a meritocracy, society [or organization] rewards (by wealth, position, and social status) those who demonstrated talent and competence, demonstrated through past actions or by competition.” The bottom line: brush up on your skills, get lean on your celebrity gossip and focus on bettering yourself.
