Case-Mate Hug

You know those times when you’re at the airport and your smartphone dies right when you’re typing that last message? You look around for a charging station or free outlet, but of course none are in sight. Ya, we’ve all been there. Well, at CES, Case-Mate cut the cables and offered TechZulu a Hug.

A new wireless charging system, the Hug is similar to the Powermat, but at half the price (retailing at $89.99 online). It features a case for the iPhone 3G or 3Gs and a wireless charging pad. Simply lay your encased device on the mat and voila! It charges in about the same amount of time as it would with cables.

Another important differentiator with the Hug is Case-Mate’s involvement with the Wireless Power Consortium, an organization dedicated to standardizing the technology behind wireless charging systems. Don’t be surprised if you start seeing wireless charging in cars, furniture (think: tabletops) or even airline TV trays. Hmm…any takers, @VirginAmerica?
