The machine revolution has begun, artificial intelligence is here. The latest advancements in machine learning look to transform whole industries, redefining the workforce and in many instances replacing human interactions. Seemingly human chatbots, designed to make people happier in China elicit responses of love and friendship. Mark Zuckerberg wants one in his home, a personal AI butler likened to Marvel’s Jarvis; a being that would not only control home lighting and ambiance, it would also answer the door and recognize Mark’s friends.
As technology advances and systems become increasingly automated, the threat of cyber attacks becomes ever more serious. This is equally true for governments, large corporations and even smaller businesses. While hackers and cyber criminals have been around since the birth of the internet, society’s increasing dependence on technology has raised the stakes.
It’s easy to get confused by all the new technical jargon that seems to be constantly spilling out of our computer screens. By now, you’ve probably heard about big data as a service, machine learning, and now deep learning, but differentiating between them isn’t always the easiest thing to do. The temptation may even be to ignore them, but all of these terms are actually a pretty big deal.
“Black boxes” were originally devices that are installed in airplanes to record two things: sound in the aircraft, and aircraft computer data. This information is generally extracted in the instance of a plane crash in order for pilots to try to figure out what exactly happened. Now, the technology is being installed in most new automobiles in order to track driving, which would help people lower their insurance costs exponentially.
Community. My biggest take away from Startup Grind Conference 2016 is how genuinely the organization is committed to uniting and helping startups accelerate together on a global level. Being that I devote my life connecting quality people in the LA tech ecosystem with WeAreLATech , I know how rare it is to find people like Derek Anderson. Derek Andersen founded Startup Grind, he moderated many of the fireside chats at Startup Grind Conference 2016 on the main stage and gave opening and closing remarks, but what caught my attention is how he spoke; his tone of voice and the types of questions and comments he made.
Coming up with a new idea, and launching your startup is one thing, three entrepreneurs do this every second. This amounts to a huge 100 million new startups launching every year. Actually taking the action steps to transform an idea into a sustainable business and scaling is a very different story. Almost all of these new businesses will stagnate and fail. It’s less sexy, but setting up stable foundations for building a new enterprise means the difference between next-level success, and fizzing out.
