There are so many activities and events that have sprouted this year to support the thriving tech scene in Southern California. From LA Demo Day to Silicon Beach Fest to Crowdstart LA to hackathons to Startup Weekends, companies and entrepreneurs alike have joined forces to feed the startup ecosystem. With all these many activities and so many people coming together it becomes inevitable that situations may arise that can interfere with the community’s best interest.

On August 9th, Startup Weekend San Diego and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University partnered with Google to host the very first Startup Weekend focused on helping Veterans, Service Members and Military Families turn their visions into reality in creating a startup company.

Not everyone turns to angels or VCs to raise money, as evidenced by the massive trend in crowdfunding. President Obama further solidified this approach to fundraising with the passage of the JOBS Act allowing small businesses and startups to raise up to $1 million a year without requiring a public offering.

Are you familiar with The Secret and The Law of Attraction? It’s the theory that you can manifest your thoughts into reality. Last week, I attended an event hosted by The Los Angeles User Experience Meetup at Cross Campus in Santa Monica. World renowned speaker and author, Eric Reiss presented the teachings of his new book, Usable Usability: Simple Steps for Making Stuff Better. He is the Content Strategist and CEO of FatDUX, headquartered in Copahagen, Denmark, a global company specializing in user experience with offices worldwide in Los Angeles, Budapest, Zagreb and Prague.

On Tuesday, July 10, Crowdfunder hosted Crowdstart LA, the first crowdsourced startup contest at the Fairmont Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica. The event was sold out, attracting founders, angels, VC’s and future entrepreneurs in the LA Startup Community. A total of 10 startups made up of 5 companies that received the most votes from the crowd and 5 companies chosen by the Angels and VC judges pitched in front of a live audience for a chance of winning $25,000 in funding.

Insteegram is a startup that allows you to create amazing and unique t-shirts using your own Instagram photos. It uses Instagram’s API and prints on American Apparel t-shirts. You simply sign in with your Instagram account, choose your favorite photo, and get your custom made t-shirt shipped directly to you. Based in Los Angeles, California, Insteegram currently ships worldwide. The company has experienced substantial user growth since their launch early this year.

IdeaMensch held it’s third gathering in Los Angeles last week to kick off a 48-state road trip (#IM48) across America of inspiring talks to help innovators bring ideas to life. Founded by advertising digital executive Mario Schulzke, IdeaMensch profiles doers to help and inspire dreamers to seed their ideas and make them grow into reality. The talks center around 4 presentations by innovators that last 15 minutes and walk the audience through the trials and tribulations the presenters faced to bring their ideas into successful businesses.
