There is a plethora of tech innovation going on in Los Angeles right now, and not only in Silicon Beach — but all over from downtown to the valleys to everywhere in between. New entrepreneurs are setting up shop and the city is encouraging tech development with exciting initiatives. Keeping track of all the new companies, funding, networking and events going on across town is challenging.
Startups
For a long time now, startup founders who couldn’t raise round of funding had to boot strap it all the way or simply give up on their ventures for lack of a better exit option. A new platform dubbed Exitround, has launched which claims is “a private, anonymous marketplace for founders to discreetly explore strategic acquisition opportunities.”
I could feel the hackers excitement as I stepped into the AT&T and American Airline’s room at the Hilton in downtown Austin at SXSW 2013. This isn’t AT&T Developers Program’s first rodeo at SXSW. All I know is things are super dialed in at these hacks. AT&T, American Airlines and the other sponsors (like dot CO, Hertz, and Voice Park), spare no expense to make sure these hackers are treated like royalty. Not only did they get all types of swag and great food, these hackers got to be some of the first to build on APIs from AT&T and American Airlines.
I get tired trudging through endless websites to figure out where to watch a movie or show online. There are tons of places to buy, rent, or stream movies and shows, but each website has a certain set of shows and movies on their list. Wouldn’t it be nice to find all that information in one place? That’s where Fanhattan chimes in.

Music streaming services are either full of ads that interrupt the flow of music or have a premium service to hear the latest and greatest songs without interruption. Even with all that cash flow, the listeners only hear bands from big labels and the smaller indie bands are pushed away and forgotten. It’s hard for smaller labels to get any radio time and to have their name known in the music world, thus they have less resources to grow from. Earbits wants to fix those problems for listeners and small-time bands by recreating the music streaming service.
Lost your bike? Where are my kids? Has the delivery truck found the best route to its destination? My motorcycle was stolen? These are some questions that have gone through the minds of business owners and the general public alike. According to Valarm co-founder, Lorenzo Gonzalez, his motorcycle was stolen from an airport parking lot. Because of his unfortunate event, Lorenzo and his brother, Edward Pultar, teamed up and decided to build an app to prevent thefts and other applications for research and data.
With software developed, tested and turned in, the results of UCLA Anderson School of Management’s DEV Contest were announced on Sunday afternoon to a room full of smiling faces. The winners were given their prizes and their competitors applauded rapidly in their support, a great sign of LA’s flourishing tech community’s mindset of encouragement and coexistence to all that strive to build and create.
