My interest was piqued last year during a phone call with Nick Allen, a member of my CALinnovates Advisory Board. Nick told me that he was in the process of winding down his fund at Spring Ventures, which would allow him to focus his energy on a new business he founded with Sunil Paul. The new venture, called SideCar, launched in San Francisco last June.
TechZulu has been covering the South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive festival for five years now, and we’ve seen a lot in that time. We remember when Foursquare was battling it out with local Austin competitor Gowalla, and when Brian Solis would instigate pop-up champagne parties at the Driskill.
Next stop for the AT&T hackathon series is Atlanta! People don’t sleep on this thriving city. Atlanta is home to many top technology companies including Dell, AT&T Mobility, and CNN. It ranks third for cities in the country with the most Fortune 500 headquarters. So it is a no-brainer that AT&T would slide through to spread love to the developer community here.
Google announced it will retire its Reader service July 1 to the disappointment of many, and many were out already looking for the best alternative. However, Google had something else in mind, launching a service that might even be better than Google Reader.

OMG. It is times like these that I wish I was a developer. This weekend March 23-24, Friskies Cat Food is hosting a “Games for Cats Hackathon” with a $15,000 dollar cash prize going to the developer who comes up with the winning app or cat game. Yes, using colors, swipes, animation and a scratch-resistant iPad, there is no telling how many hours of fun can be created for cats.
I could feel the hackers excitement as I stepped into the AT&T and American Airline’s room at the Hilton in downtown Austin at SXSW 2013. This isn’t AT&T Developers Program’s first rodeo at SXSW. All I know is things are super dialed in at these hacks. AT&T, American Airlines and the other sponsors (like dot CO, Hertz, and Voice Park), spare no expense to make sure these hackers are treated like royalty. Not only did they get all types of swag and great food, these hackers got to be some of the first to build on APIs from AT&T and American Airlines.
I get tired trudging through endless websites to figure out where to watch a movie or show online. There are tons of places to buy, rent, or stream movies and shows, but each website has a certain set of shows and movies on their list. Wouldn’t it be nice to find all that information in one place? That’s where Fanhattan chimes in.

With travel on the hackers’ brains and technology at their fingertips, these geeks are going to get knee deep in some code! For the hack, AT&T has partnered with American Airlines to create a venue for these techies to fly technology into the future! AT&T has numerous hackathons during the year, and the SXSW event is expected to be one of the largest of 2013.
